“The hunter, hiding in the reeds, throws a stick or ball into the water and the Toller runs down and plays near the water's edge. Its antics and appearance fascinate the waterfowl so much that they swim close to investigate. This luring technique is known as tolling. When the waterfowl are close enough, the hunter calls the toller back and stands-up to send the birds into flight in order to shoot them, sending the toller back to retrieve those that are downed.”
The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever originated in Nova Scotia in the early 19th Century. In appearance it is medium sized, compact, well muscled with a heavily feathered tail, energetic and a good swimmer. Its temperament is normally kind, intelligent, confident and playful, and it is easy to train.
In colour, the Toller ranges from orange to red, with lighter featherings and lighter on the underside of the tail. It often has white markings at the tip of tail, the feet, and the chest.
